Rewriting the Greats: A Poetry Competition

Rewriting the Greats: A Poetry Competition

A competition in which you retell your favorite poem in your own style, or your own time!

Have you ever come across an old poem and wondered how it would have been written if the poet had lived in our time? Well, now you can see for yourself how that would turn out! In this competition, you'll be taking your poetry skills to the next level and rewriting classic poems as if they had been written in this century.

The concept is simple, but the execution is a little trickier than that. Essentially, you will be telling the same story as the original poet, but by no means will it be the same poem. Perhaps you wish to retell the story of The Lady of Shalott? Maybe you modernize one of Shakespeare's sonnets?

There are so many possibilities with this competition. Hold on to your top hats, my friends!

How to Participate

1. Write a poem that is a modern adaptation of a classic poem. This might involve changing the time it is set in, changing each character’s role, or twisting the poem to suit your needs, but it does need to be changed in some way.

2. Rewrite a classic poem keeping the exact same situation and turning it modern. You may only change the writing style, keeping the events exactly as they happened in the poem.
