Every song tells a story...
But can you figure out what it is?
A great piece of writing is self-referential and independent, but that's not to say it isn't inspired by something else - whether it be an experience, another book, or history. We all know that writing is only one of the many art forms, and some of the greatest authors use paintings, for instance, as inspiration for their works.
Now, it's no secret that music - in all of its forms - inspires writing. In fact, the lyrics to a song, much like a poem, can even inspire an entire novel. But did you know that literature started, even before poetry, through song?
This is why we have challenged you to a write a story inspired by a song. We figured, it's time we go back to the roots of story-telling, music.
Write a short story revolving around any one of the following songs. Consider lyrics, beat, pace, and overall tone of the song. Your movella should be no more than 3,000 words, so make sure you don't go over the limit!
You have seven songs to choose from:
Use Somebody by Kings of Leon
One Thing by One Direction
Wings by Little Mix
Near To You by A Fine Frenzy
Space Oddity by David Bowie
Pompeii by Bastille
Love Story by Taylor Swift
After a great public outcry for more songs, we ran a competition to allow two more song slots. And the winners were:
Lego House by Ed Sheeran
How To Save A Life by The Fray
Make sure you look up the lyrics and listen to the songs a couple of times to get a good feel before writing! After all, a good writer always does his research before putting pen to paper. And this is all about interpreting the lyrics to create a story... not just writing about the band or singer!
Other than that, this competition gives you the chance to be as original as you want, so don't be afraid to think outside the box, and make sure your story stands out.
Have fun, and let your mind move to the beat of the music!
Three winners will receive these awesome Steel Series headsets:
So what are you waiting for? The possibilities are endless and the prizes are exciting, so get started! You only have five weeks to write and submit your movella, so GO GO GO!
Best of luck!
