Where there is no imagination, there is no horror - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Halloween has spawned a plethora of scary, spooky stories, ranging from ancient, gothic ghost tales, to more contemporary ones.  However the tale is told and in whichever format, the reader is always guaranteed to be spooked, frightened and sometimes stunned!

Why are you telling me this?

Well Movellians, prepare to be stunned with our Spooky Story competition, sponsored by our friends at:

What's Swapit?

Swapit.co.uk is the best place on the web to get awesome things for FREE – including games, gadgets, films and fashion!  Sign-up for free at www.swapit.co.uk

Tell me more I hear you cry.....

You have just over 2 weeks to write the scariest, spookiest, most chilling story that you can imagine.  There are no other restrictions to this competition, but there is a slight twist.  As Swapit are our exclusive partner for this competition, who are experts in swapping stuff, we thought it would make it more interesting if we asked you to be very imaginative and swap conventional settings and characters for unconventional ones, without compromising the main genre/theme.  For example, your main character may be a vampire but the setting is a shopping centre.  Or you main character may be a checkout worker, but the story’s set in a haunted house.

Anything else:

1) We've divided the comeptiton into 2 sections:

  • UK entrants will be in with the chance of winning an amazing amount of Swapits.
  • Non-UK entrants can win an ipod touch, and 2 sets of "The Enemy" series by Charlie Higson, thanks to our lovely friends at Penguin.

2) You can be from anywhere, write in any style and to any length, and write stories, poems or novels.

3) Enter by using the BIG GREEN BUTTON in the corner that says 'Join This Competition'.

4) A shortlist will be made based on likes, reads and favourites - so be sure to share your story with everyone you know. We will judge the shortlist along with our friends at Swapit.

Two dormmates in college were in the same science class. The teacher had just reminded them about the midterm the next day when one dormmate - let's call her Juli - got asked to this big bash by the hottest guy in school. The other dormmate, Meg, had pretty much no interest in going and, being a diligent student, she took notes on what the midterm was about. After the entire period of flirting with her date, Juli was totally unprepared for her test, while Meg was completely prepared for a major study date with her books.

At the end of the day, Juli spent hours getting ready for the party while Meg started studying. Juli tried to get Meg to go, but she was insistent that she would study and pass the test. The girls were rather close and Juli didn't like leaving Meg alone to be bored while she was out having a blast. Juli finally gave up, using the excuse that she would cram in homeroom the next day.

Juli went to the party and had the time of her life with her date. She headed back to the dorm around 2 a.m. and decided not to wake Meg. She went to bed nervous about the midterm and decided she would wake up early to ask Meg for help.

She woke up and went to wake Meg. Meg was lying on her stomach, apparently sound asleep. Juli rolled Meg over to reveal Meg's terrified face. Juli, concerned, turned on the desk lamp. Meg's study stuff was still open and had blood all over it. Meg had been slaughtered. Juli, in horror, fell to the floor and looked up to see, written on the wall in Meg's blood: "Aren't you glad you didn't turn on the lights!"

    As told by Jon Little...

I heard about a girl who went back to her dorm room late one night to get her books before heading to her boyfriend's room for the night. She entered but did not turn on the light, knowing that her roommate was sleeping. She stumbled around the room in the dark for several minutes, gathering books, clothes, toothbrush, etc. before finally leaving.

The next day, she came back to her room to find it surrounded by police. They asked if she lived there and she said yes. They took her into her room, and there, written in blood on the wall, were the words, "Aren't you glad you didn't turn on the light?" Her roommate was being murdered while she was getting her things.

(I've heard this several different times. Each time it was at a different university.)

  • Miranda341The Haunted Doll
Robert the Haunted Doll has been living in the basement of a museum in Key West, Florida for years. With his sailor suit and sweet smile, he seems like a typical children’s toy, but this doll actually lives locked inside a glass case due to his growing reputation as the most haunted doll in the world.
Back before the turn of the century, the Otto family lived in Key West, where they lived on a plantation with servants who they greatly abused. One of the servants, disgruntled with her situation, gave the Ottos’ son a doll she had laced with voodoo. Neighbors began to claim seeing Robert looking out each window of the house while the family was away, and the family itself began to speak of hearing the doll giggling and running around the house. The son began to have nightmares. He would scream out in the night, furniture in his bedroom toppled over, and further havoc fell upon the family.

Not knowing what else to do, the Otto family placed the doll in the attic. But house guests could hear footsteps pacing back and forth, with the same ominous giggling wafting through the rafters.

A new family purchased the home in the 1970s, where a little girl discovered Robert and told similar tales of experiencing the doll’s possession and ability to terrify her. Robert eventually ended up at his current residence in the Florida museum, where employees give regular reports of the same antics he was known for back in the 1800s. Children are welcome to come to the museum and visit Robert today … if they dare …
