”Hey Aria, have you heard?” Spencer asked me, she was so excited, I had no idea why.
“Heard what?” I asked her, and looked over at Emily and Hanna.
“We’re going to get a new English teacher, and people say he’s hot.” She said, and I looked at her and shook my head. We walked into our classroom and sat down at our seats. When our new English teacher came in, I couldn’t see his face, but I was 99% sure, I knew that back, and then he turned around. I was 100% sure - it was Ezra.
When he saw me he couldn’t say anything, but I knew what he thinking, and I thought the same, ‘Holy crap’. Everyone looked at us, they couldn’t understand what was happening. It was so quiet, until there was a classmate who asked if we knew each other. I looked away and the same did Ezra, we tried to pretend that this wasn’t happening, but I knew I needed to explain it to my friends. I needed to lie, I couldn’t tell them the truth. Not because I didn’t trust them, but all the things that Ezra and me had together, would be gone if people knew about it. And Ezra would have to find another job. No, I couldn’t do that to him, I loved him and I think he loved me to. When the class was over, I wanted to talk to Ezra, but my friends came over and asked me about what happened between Mr. Fitz and me. I looked at them, I didn’t know what to say, so I just said, “he was hotter than I thought,” I lied and they believed me. I didn’t like to do that, but I had to, I needed to keep the secret. I looked for Ezra, but I couldn’t find him, he must have been going down to the cafeteria. When Spencer and I were going to the next class, I caught sight of Ezra, I stopped and looked at him, he saw me, and then he smiled at me. I smiled back: we had a flirt going.
And Spencer saw that. Ezra looked away so fast and I didn’t understand why, until I saw Spencer looked at me. “I can explain.” I looked at Ezra and then at Spencer again, “He’s really hot.” I lied, or did I? Seriously, I don’t think I did, because I actually thought he was hot, so I actually did tell her the truth, I think. But she didn’t believe me, I could see it in her face, she wanted more answers, and I knew Spencer; she didn’t stop before she knew what she wanted to know.
When school was over I drove home, but not alone. Spencer, Hanna and Emily drove after me, they wanted more answers, Spencer must have told the other girls about what she saw in school. When we came upstairs and into my room, Hanna closed the door, and they all looked at me. “Where do you know Mr. Fitz from?” Spencer asked, I looked at them and I could see they wanted an answer, and they wanted it now.
“Sorry, I met him on a ba… bank, he… Yep I met him in a bank.” I lied, and they knew it. “Sorry girls, but I can’t tell you anything, before I’ve talked to Ez… Mr. Fitz.”
“Do you know his first name?” Spencer was mad, and I understood why, if one of my best friends lied to me, I’d be mad as well.
“Please, don’t be mad at me, I’ll tell you everything when I can. Please understand.” I said
They smiled and gave me a hug, “Thanks, girls.” When the girls had gone home, I walked downstairs and into to the dining room. The table was set for eight people, but only four lived in the house. Were we going to have guests over? I walked up to my mom, who was in the kitchen with my dad. I looked at them and asked them “Who’s coming over?” I pointed to the dinner table. They looked at me and smiled, “Some teachers from your school.” My mom said.
I looked strangely at her, “Why?” I asked. I didn’t understand anything.
“I have been working at Rosewood High School.” She said.
I just looked at them both; I didn’t know what to say. “Ohh, great. Ohh, what class?”
“I’m taking over Mrs. Bennett’s class.” She said, and once she said it, I was happy about the choice she had made, and for her. I didn’t hate Mrs. Bennett and she wouldn’t be my teacher. When I was in my room, my brother came in and told me it was dinnertime. I looked at him with a smile and nodded, and then I got up and looked in the mirror before walking downstairs. When I came into the dining room I stopped short, what was Ezra doing there?
“Aria, sit down next to Ezra.” My mom said.
“Ezra?” I looked weirdly at her, “Do you mean Mr. Fitz?”
“Aria, you’re not in school, just call them all by their first name.” Said my mom. I looked at her and then at Ezra, he smiled at me. I went and sat down next to Ezra. “Hey.” I said and smiled at him.
“Hey Aria.” He said. The whole evening we sat and looked at each other without listening to what the others talked about. Ezra told us about his life, before he started working at Rosewood High School, and afterwards, he told us that he met a beautiful girl, before he moved to Rosewood, and that he wished he could be with her, but he couldn’t. He stood up and said, “Sorry I have to go now, thanks for a great dinner and evening.”
“Aria, can you follow Ezra out?” My mom asked.
I nodded and followed Ezra to the door. He looked at me, gave me his hand and walked out the door. When the door closed, I looked at the leaflet Ezra had given me. The leaflet was an address. I walked inside to the others, and before they saw what I had in my hand, it was in my pocket. I sat down on the couch again, and listened to them. When they had all gone, I asked my mom if I could go to Spencer’s, and she said that I could. I walked out to my car and drove to the address Ezra had given me.
