Theory: *Spoilers* The Gem That TRULY Shattered Pink Diamond

Steven Universe: Wanted premiered tonight, and it completely changed our views of Rose Quartz and a certain diamond. Today I’m going to explain the theory that is basically canon at this point:  Rose Quartz Didn't Shatter Pink Diamond.

I was excited to watch Steven Universe: Wanted tonight and boy was I shocked. The fact that Rose Quartz did NOT shatter Pink Diamond. At first I was confused. For the past two seasons we have been constantly reminded that Pink Diamond was shattered by Rose Quartz so Rose could gain control of the Earth and protect it.

But that’s not what happened.

I’m going to turn to science on this one. Here’s where I’m going to make my grade school science teacher proud.

I pulled up a Mohs scale online. For some back round, the Mohs scale was a scale of hardness from 1-10 developed by Friedrich Mohs. 1 being the softest and 10 the hardest. I found a specific one with both Diamond and Rose Quartz on it (Pink Diamond isn’t on it because it doesn’t matter the hue; Diamond is the hardest one on the scale).

Rose Quartz is a 7. It can be easily scratched, but it’s a little bit harder to break it. However, direct harmful contact with a Diamond and it can be broken with ease. However, there’s something shocking with the Diamond.

Diamond is the hardest gem on the scale. So far, no one has found a gem harder. Not any gem can shatter a Diamond. Rose Quartz absolutely can not. However, never fear. There is one gem that can break a Diamond.

Only a Diamond can shatter a Diamond.

Sounds kind of creepy, doesn’t it?

I’d especially like to point out Blue Zircon’s defense. I researched the hardness of Rubies, Sapphires, and Agates. Here’s what I came up with.

Ruby: 9

Sapphire: 9

Agate: 6.5-7

Based on the strengths of the gems said to have been defending Pink Diamond, Rose didn't have a chance against at least the Rubies and Sapphires. It was also clearly stated there were NO Rose Quartz in the area except for the one in question. If Rose tried to fight past these defending gems, she would have been beaten! There’s no way she could get past the Rubies and Sapphires.

But a gem with superior authority and leadership from all the defense could.

Yellow Diamond shattered Pink Diamond.

I can’t quite come up with how and why Yellow Diamond shattered Pink Diamond, but Yellow Diamond’s unease, body language, aggression, and how she wanted to shatter Rose Quartz/Steven as soon as she could, points right to the fact Yellow shattered Pink. She was trying to cover her tracks. Once Yellow Diamond had Rose Quartz and the Earth destroyed, no one would even dare to guess she was the true war criminal.

She would easily get away with murder. Fratricide, if that’s what you’d like to call it.

Yellow Diamond shattered Pink Diamond.

I’d like to quickly shout out to the fact Rebecca Sugar and everyone working on Steven Universe have done their science wonderfully. I’m amazed and truly on the edge of my seat for what happens next in the series! If you’d like the source for the Mohs scale, I’ll put the link down here.
