Roald Dahl's City of the Unexpected

A magnificent celebration of the spirit of Roald Dahl, created on the streets of the city that made him.

Last weekend, an unexpected and truly magical event capturing the creative spirit of bestselling children's author, Roald Dahl, transformed the streets of the city that made him. The Welsh capital, in which Dahl was born 100 years ago, came to a standstill as his life’s work was celebrated on a scale as enormous as a crocodile.

A giant peach seemed to have fallen from the sky leaving thousands of spectators stunned, speechless and sprinkled by a touch of Dahl magic. A parade led the peach through the streets of Cardiff towards one of its most iconic landmarks – Cardiff Castle. Accompanied by extraordinary street performances and spectacular sights that dazzled onlookers all over the city centre, it truly was a day they would never, ever forget!

Mischief, mayhem and magic; a scene that could have been taken straight out of Roald Dahl’s books. Everyone – from children to adults and the elderly – was amazed to see many of the author’s beloved stories brought to life. Two years of planning came together to bring everything from unusual set pieces to special appearances by some of his most memorable characters – The Witches, Mrs Trunchball, a fantastic-at-tightrope-walking Mr Fox, and James who was rescued from the peach by a brave firefighter. If you looked closely you could even spot some Oompa Loompas in the crowd. Everyone definitely seemed to get into the spirit, and even the sun had come out to celebrate as people sang and danced through the city to celebrate Dahl’s centenary.

The spectacular day would then conclude with an unexpected invitation to the wedding of Miss Ladybird and Mr Fireman in front of a well-known building that had been projected to look like candy taken straight from Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory! Vows were exchanged, songs were bellowed from rooftops, crowds were astonished and memories were made that would last a lifetime.

A day that started with a giant peach would once again end with a giant peach. It seemed to have fallen from the sky in front of the wedding guests, with James suspending from it! And no wedding would be complete without an incredible display of fireworks – a rather expected ending to a truly unexpected day.

Yet, the celebrations didn’t just end there. The following morning would see a Dahl-icious pyjama picnic in the park followed by a massive pillow fight, with special appearances by Danny the Champion of the World and George’s Marvellous Medicine machine. A fun, exciting, and magnificently magical weekend full of imagination that would leave a mark on the city as much as Dahl’s stories.
