REVIEW: Books and Cups of Tea reviews Insurgent for Movellas.by GeorgiaT, Thursday March 19, 2015
Find out what Olivia from Books and Cups of Tea thought of #Insurgent.
Insurgent is the second film in the Divergent trilogy, we catch back up with the main characters who are now on the run from Jeanine and the rest of the power-hungry Erudites. Facing struggles from losing their families and watching their friends die, Tris and Four search for allies in the journey to find out what the Erudites are hiding. Together, they face trial after trial, as they unwind the secrets of their past and ultimately their entire futures.
Firstly, I want to say, do NOT go into this film expecting the book! If you do, I'm afraid to say you'll be disappointed. There were a lot of changes from the book and I found that compared to it, the film plot was somewhat lacking, the main world building had already been done in the first film and I feel like it was just put on the sidelines for this film.
What definitely wasn't on the sidelines is action! There was a loooooot of action scenes, with fights and arguments left right and centre! I've heard a lot of the cast describe this as a romantic film with action but I would definitely describe it as primarily an action film. The romance that was in the film was perfect though and Four and Tris just gave me all the feels!
There's not a lot of humour because this is such a heavy film (especially the truth serum scene in which Shailene's acting was in-credi-ble!) but there were a surprising number of comic relief moments, namely brought in though Miles Teller's portrayal of Peter, he's horrible, but he has a perfect, dark, sarcastic humour and timing which kind of makes you forgive him for all his horrid ways.
A lot of things are condensed in this film, especially the new characters and their backstories so I feel that if you haven't read the books you may be left a bit confused. After the crazy hype about Suki Waterhouse joining the cast we saw her for about a minute then she was gone. I would also have loved to see more of Four's mother Evelyn as well as the relationship between Tris and Christina and of course Uriah!
Some moments just warrant major fangirling though, you'll see what I mean when you watch it but for now let me just say: Caleb running and Four with children! *heart eyes*
The visual effects are just stunning, with the beautiful contrast between the high tech faction headquarters and the crumbling city. Seeing each faction so close up was lovely and gave much more insight into the difference between them, something I feel was missing in the first film.
Overall I give this film **** 4 stars. If you loved Divergent then you'll definitely adore Insurgent. If you haven't read the book you may be left scratching your head but there's no doubt that you'll be on the edge of your seat all through, whilst the character development and the cutesy Four and Tris moments will have you swooning.
Basically, I loved it despite the flaws and came out wanting to be a Dauntless!
