It’s not just an amateurs’ game.
Fanfiction sometimes gets a bit of a bad rap, accused of being uninventive, amateurish or lazy. Here at Movellas, though, we know that’s simply not true. Fanfiction not only pays homage to a beloved piece of literature, but can be a means of engaging with problems in the original (check out fix-it fic), or experimenting with how a dramatically different setting might affect plot (see AU fanfic).
It can be a challenging, dynamic and most definitely creative process -so no wonder so many professional writers are drawn to the genre! We reveal our top ten authors who also write fanfiction -some of whom shout it from the rooftops, whilst others might just surprise you….
1. The Bronte Sisters
The Bronte sisters, famous for acclaimed classics such as 'Jane Eyre' and 'Wuthering Heights' also dabbled in what we now know as RPF, or 'Real Person Fiction' -inserting historical figures such as the Duke of Wellington into fantastical realms.
2. Cassandra Clare
YA Queen Cassandra Clare has wowed readers with her Mortal Instruments series. But did you know that she's also a prolific fanfiction writer? She's a total Potterhead, and the majority of her fanfiction takes place within the wizarding world, including the hugely popular Draco Trilogy.
3. S.E. Hinton
67 year old S.E. Hinton, author of YA classic The Outsiders certainly keeps up with the times! She admits to writing fanfiction based on the hit TV series 'Supernatural'. If you watch the show, keep your eyes peeled -she appeared as an extra in Season 7!
4. Neil Gaiman
Is there anything this man can't do? Aside from his books, graphic novels and screenwriting works, Gaiman has experimented multiple times with fanfiction, drawing inspiration from The Chronicles of Narnia, H.P. Lovecraft's novels and Sherlock Holmes.
5. Meg Cabot
Although, as far as we know, Meg Cabot has left her fanfiction writing career behind her (hey, working on all those bestselling Princess Diaries books is a full-time job!), she nevertheless started out by writing Star Wars fanfiction as a tween, and welcomes submissions on her site.
6. Rainbow Rowell
Rowell is a girl after our own hearts -not only is she the author of Fangirl, a fabulously relatable portrayal of fan culture, she also wrote the first draft for NaNoWriMo! But that's not all -in between Fangirl and her fourth published novel Landline, the author composed her own 30,000 word long Harry/Draco fanfiction.
7. Michael Chabon
Author of the Pulitzer Prize winning The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay Michael Chabon is a staunch supporter of fanfiction, going as far as to declare that 'all fiction, is fan fiction in that you are always inspired to write by things that you love'. His novel The Final Solution is fantastic Sherlock Holmes fanfic and instead of hiding it, Chabon proclaims it proudly!
