New Harry Potter Story Puts Dastardly Umbridge in the Spotlight

J.K. Rowling is set to dish all the dirt on one of her finest villains

The Harry Potter universe has been expanding considerably lately, thanks to the news of the upcoming ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ movies and J.K. Rowling’s fab new stories on Pottermore.

This week will bring about another magical offering -a perfect Halloween treat for Potterheads, the author will release yet another new story exploring Professor Umbridge’s life.

Fans of the series will remember (and be possibly traumatised by) Umbridge’s sadistic methods of discipline during her brief spell as Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher in ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’, as well as her love of all things pink and fluffy.

What makes Umbridge extra creepy is that she’s a villain we can easily imagine encountering in our own world. Unlike Voldemort, she disguises her sociopathic traits under a her twee, sickly-sweet exterior. Just like Umbridge, in real life, the bad guys aren’t always immediately identifiable Although there’s DEFINITELY something creepy about a person who thinks this much kitten paraphenalia is acceptable:

So what else do we know about the story? Well, a statement released on Pottermore promises that the site will release a "rich, 1700-word back story about Umbridge's life, filled with many new details, as well as Rowling's revealing first-person thoughts and reflections about the character".

It’s expected to drop on Friday 31st October (aka Halloween), so watch this space! Oh, and try not to crash Pottermore again.

Do you have any theories about Umbridge’s backstory? What Harry Potter character do you think J.K. should revisit next? Tell us in the comments!
