A day in the life of a writer

No, they don't just go on Movellas all day...

YA writer Virginia Boecker (pictured above) gives us an insight into her daily life:

"I’m up at 6:45 nearly every day. To some this is ungodly early, others ungodly late. I’ve never been a morning person so to me it’s a bit of the former. But I have two young children so when they’re up, I’m up. I check email, Twitter, Facebook, news, and my favorite gossip blogs.

7:00 – 8:00: Preparing my children for school, making their lunches, feeding the dog, breaking up a fight (or three), packing up my things for the day.  Even though I’m a full-time writer, I don’t like to work at home. There are just too many things there to distract me! I’m a world-class multi-tasker, but at times it makes me feel like I have a world-class case of Attention Deficit Disorder. And while a split focus is good for getting a lot of things done, writing unfortunately is not one of them.

9:00-10:00: After I drop my kids off at school, I head to the gym. I do this every day, Monday through Friday. It’s a great love in my life to be able to run, to exercise, to be active and strong, and I’m addicted. Believe it or not, exercise has taught me things that I apply to writing: the value of discipline, consistency, testing your limits, and the ability to push through something, no matter how painful it is.

11:00-3:00: My gym has conference rooms and quiet areas with a Café, Starbucks, etc., and it’s my office of choice. Right now, I’m currently drafting the sequel to THE WITCH HUNTER. I’m not a particularly fast drafter; I aim for 1500 words a day. As I mentioned, I’m easily distracted (hello, Twitter) so I need those hours to get there! I’m also part of several debut author groups (Freshman Fifteens, Fearless Fifteens, Class of 2k15) and am active on those blogs as well as Movellas. So if I have a post due, I’ll work on that during this time too.

3:00-8:00: Home duty. Pick up my kids from school, walk the dog, run errands…plus sports and tutoring and homework and baths and laundry and cooking and tidying up – the million other things one does when they have a family!

8:00-11:00: Ah, me time. Usually this means hanging out with my husband, listening to music, reading. Sometimes it means watching TV (though to be honest, I’m not much of a TV person. Unless it’s Game of Thrones, I can’t be bothered.) Lately, though, it means writing. I’m drafting a companion novella to THE WITCH HUNTER that’s got my attention at the present. I really enjoy writing at night! I’m relaxed, done with the day, and there’s no better way to cap it off than by doing something you love."
